Dreamworld

I have a question about the now defunct dreamworld because I never experienced it. Were the dream balls the only poke balls you could use to catch Pokemon? Or could you use any ball of your choosing, but if you wanted to have a pokemon in a dream ball it needed to be caught in the dream world?
