I didn't follow the game too much but I didn't the market penetration people were hoping for and because of that I guess The Pokemon Company decided to exclude it from future events and make way for more TCG and VGC support.
This doesn't however mean it will be dropped from the likes of EVO which for a fighting game I believe is far more important to be included in
