What I always do is test my teams on Pokemon showdown.
Yet if you are new, I would recommend watching others battle and build from there. That will help you get an idea of what goes good together (dont just copy their team though). Make sure you are seeing all types of battle styles and teams so you can be able to counter them later on.
Also, use websites like serebii to help you figure out the moves and abilities that your favorite Pokemon has and then figure out how to take advantage of their strong points.
