@PerchPond I'd say that just as a fan of series you should experience the games in their fullness. BW is certainly the most JRPG the series has ever gotten, and it's just fantastic. The games got a lot of crap for being different, but that difference makes them one of my favorite generations, behind Johto and Kanto (mostly because of nostalgia) and I really recommend you get a copy!
