I also keep a notebook! I mostly keep it for teambuilding, but I also write down what works and what does not work with that team.
I'm a newbie when it comes to team building, so I use the notebook for jotting down my own perspective in playing someone else's team. As of now, I usually build a ready-made team and then make notes about what works and what doesn't work with it - and make modifications as necessary.
I can second everything else that has been said, but most importantly; know your team like the back of your hand. Just knowing your movesets and some important damage calculations can be crucial to a victory. This is what the notebook can be very useful for! I usually write all threatening, possible and most common one-hit KOs or two-hit KOs down.
