Abbott Elementary is a real heart-warmer kind of show – the overall premise is simple, but the honest actions of the cast will keep you wishing for more seasons to come. Based on the lives of schoolteachers in a Philadelphia public school, where the odds are stacked against them in terms of resources and funds, these teachers go above and beyond to do what’s right for their students. Abbott Elementary is one of the best surprises of the television year so far, according to one Rotten Tomatoes critic, and we second their opinion. With a fine balance between humor and heart, this show is one that will etch its mark in television history. Lodge 49. Release Date: 2018 - 2019. Dud is exactly the kind of person his name states – a dud of a person with no idea of how to handle tomorrow. It is only by chance that he stumbles upon a rundown lodge, whose members offer him a safe space he never knew he needed. What Lodge 49 manages to do for Dud, we wish we could have access just as easily. Though you may have to wait for the show to gain momentum, there is much waiting for those who manage to stick with it. Lodge 49 is a show to be watched casually, with no particular objective in mind. Maybe that’s why it sticks so well in our heads because it just asks us to be there. Man Seeking Woman. Release Date: 2015. Josh Greenberg is not a man with the best luck in the women's department – he just can’t seem to find true love because he is too afraid to approach women. Despite the encouragement of his polar opposite best friend Mike, his career-successful sister and his parents, he just can’t seem to get his act together. When he does chance upon the opportunity to find true love, he finds out that true love is more than just the fluffy image – it comes with a serious commitment to change oneself for the sake of the other. Jay Baruchel seems perfect for this role, and his performance is oddly enjoyable and keeps us watching episode after episode. Life & Beth. Release Date: 2022. We were quite unsure about Life & Beth because the premise seemed to offer very little. But Amy Schumer’s performance as the lead wiped away all doubts. Beth seems to have it all – a successful job, a wonderfully long and happy relationship and a solid life in Manhattan. But the show starts with her having to revisit her past when her mom passes away. This unexpectedly changes her life, and it changes it forever. The show takes its time, but it’s a well-conceptualized picture of existentialism and personal awakening that reveals itself at the end. Only Murders in the Building. Release Date: 2021. Only Murders in the Building is an outstanding show according to us, and it's because of its absurd approach to true crime. Charles-Haden, Oliver and Mabel have a common interest in true crime and find themselves unexpectedly landing into one. A gruesome death occurs in their elite Upper West Side building, and the trio gets right into the investigation. They must soon discover who the killer is before it’s too late. There are almost no flaws with this show, and there’s no scenario where you won’t be charmed away by this trio. Release Date: 2020. Woke follows the life of Keef, an African American cartoonist walking the path to becoming a mainstream success. But a run-in with the police puts a different lens on the way he views the world. His direct and personal brush with racism now takes him down a new path, channeling his creative energy in awoke, provocative way. The show ends up becoming a commentary about current politics and the comedy of human interactions. But the heavy topics are balanced with the light, messy conversations that hold a depth of their own. We guarantee that this show has powerful humor that will leave an impact. The Great. Release Date: 2020. We love The Great because of what it stands for – a strong woman controlling the entirety of Russia when the country called for it. Catherine, the protagonist of the show, is married to Peter, the Emperor of Russia. But she soon finds out that this man is not fit to run the empire and plans her coup to become the Empress of the land. Catherine the Great now contends with ruling the land and the war with Sweden. The show is hilarious, to say the least, and the high energy seems just right for our screens. Dollface. Release Date: 2019. Dollface is a story of exploration amidst personal tragedy, but it’s told in an incredibly fun way. When Jules finds out that her long-time boyfriend wants to end their relationship, she is forced to rekindle old relationships with her friends of long past, who she left behind for love. The simplicity of this show is the real attraction, and the well-played-out minor details landed well during our binge. Kat Dennings is the real moat of the show, and it is her droll comedic persona that makes this show all the more enjoyable. Reservation Dogs. Release Date: 2021. Reservation Dogs is dark in its approach to humor, but the elements of drama keep us to our seats and playing the next episode. Based on the life of four indigenous, delinquent boys living off the reservation in Oklahoma, and their small-time criminal activities to gather resources to get to California, a land that brims of opportunity when compared to their land. Taiki Waititi’s representation of boyhood in an Indian Reservation area is quirky and original, you will agree with us. We’re fairly certain that a show of this kind is a new entrant to a streaming platform, and we’re glad for this breath of fresh air. Shrill. Release Date: 2019. Shrill may seem like a story about a full-figured woman navigating through a tumultuous career, but underneath the surface, it is much more than that. The well-written social commentary, placed throughout Annie’s journey of self-discovery enforces the idea that one size does not fit everyone when matters of self-acceptance are put forth.
