[ANIME] Best of A Genre - Magical Girl
#1
Hello. Here's my next Anime post.

Magical Girl anime has been around for many many years, and is easily one of the most recognizable genres of Anime. Magical Girl anime changed a lot for Anime and started a cultural success by swapping prominently male lead roles, and now having our heroines take the spotlight. Magical Girls fight to protect the world from Evil, all while looking flashy and pretty while doing so. In the 1980s, Magical Princess Minky Momo (1982) and Creamy Mami, the Magic Angel (1983–1984) showed girls transforming into a "grown-up image of themselves". This has been linked to the increasing prominence of women at this time (such as politician Doi Takako, the girl band Princess Princess and pop idol Seiko Matsuda) and the passage of the Equal Employment Opportunity Act in 1985.

Sailor Moon (Japanese: 美少女戦士セーラームーン) is considered to have revived this genre with it's first episode airing in 1992. Sailor Moon follows the story Usagi Tsukino, an underachieving schoolgirl, who is visited by a cat from a distant world named Luna. Luna reveals Usagi is in fact a Sailor Soldier whose task is to locate the Moon Princess while fighting the forces of evil. She isn't alone however, as four other girls, now "awakened" join her in her fight to stop evil. Sailor Moon's success in the states spawned translations of the original manga, 3 films, 39 video games and numerous OST releases. Sailor Moon would go on to inspire such anime as; Princess Tutu, Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha, Cardcaptor Sakura, Yuki Yuna is A Hero and Ojamaji Doremi to name just a few.

One of the more popular Magical Anime of recent times is Puella Magi Madoka Magica. Released in 2011, PMMM is widely regarded as one the best Magical Girl Anime to come out in recent times. On the outside it comes across as a regular Magical Girl Anime, but after a few episodes, you soon come to realize this series takes a dark turn quickly. This show pushes the boundaries of standard Magical Girl Anime, dealing with death, suicide, psychological trauma and much more. We see our fun loving protagonist Madoka slowly grow to realize how real the world is, as her close friends face dangerous situations, and ultimately must overcome her own fears. PMMM has 1 T.V. series and 3 Movies, the first two being an adaptation of the T.V. series with extra content, and a fourth movie is currently in the works. Stunning fight scenes, and a wonderful score bring this series together really well, and any Magical Girl fan should check it out.
