Apparently it's really not that great outside of Smash Bros 3DS, and I'm used to playing that how it is now, I think its a bit annoying how they've added it in this late when Nintendo would have known it was needed, but I guess it's how they sell more consoles. I doubt I'll be picking one up, especially because I have a 3ds with capture card too.
You can also add in buttons like that yourself if you're willing to take your faceplate off, it's not as hard as messing around with the electronics of it, you literally just take the plate off and can pop the buttons out and replace them with similar ones, if that's all you're going for?
