I would suggest by starting on pokemon showdown. You can easily build teams there and test them out to see how they fit you and just as easily make tweaks. Furthermore I would suggest checking out some youtubers (Cybertron, Ray Rizzo, Alex Ogloza) to see what the metagame is this time around.
To be very honest, I don't really know about S/M teambuilding yet as i've only just started comp. breeding but what works for me is taking a standard core that many people run and tweak it to what I think threats me.
Porygon 2, Celesteela and the Tapu's are probably in most teams so you could focus around that.
