I hate soft resetting because honestly it is very time consuming, most legendaries have a 0.3% Catch Rate, and some non legendaries aswell (I am looking at you beldum). I might start it when I get a 3ds with the L + R Buttons since mine had it broken.
Another way to tell if it is shiny is that the sequence of it appearing will have a significant gap between the appearence and the sparkle, long enough for you to know something is a little off.
