I just got the first 7 volumes today (got last 8-22 volumes yesterday, yet ordered same time) and I'm enjoying it.   It is black and white on the pages.  But sometimes pokemon actually die...in volume 2 there is an Arbok in 2 pieces.   So up to you if you get it and let kids read it.

Yeah, I'm on Volume 3 now.  I want to say there was another death later, but brain farts aren't letting me remember it.  

Though usually the pokemon get weak and you see the swirly eyes like in the cartoon.  

Yeah, some of the gym leaders are with team Rocket.  Red is the hero with Blue being the grandson.  Green is a girl that tries to get what she wants the easy way.

The manga seems great, I've only read up to the end of Gold and Silver since I dislike gen 3's protagonist's cos I'm like that. Anyways have fun with the series.
