[VGC] I am currently looking at my favorite Pokemon, Grumpig for the VGC format.

To do this, I need data. I need moves you guys think are plausible, some prototype sets, good partners, Pokemon that wall it, offensive and defensive calcs, the whole nine yards. It's possible, Sejun Park brought a Pachirisu to Worlds and won, I think I can at least make a build that can be used in VGC battles.

While grumpigs stats arent that great he has a really good variety off moves, phychic or pyshock to deal alot of damage, he has Teeter Dance, this move is deadly being able to confuse both of your opponent can be monstrus, me also gets power gem for talonflame and charizard, some other moves he has are amnesia, skill swap, and whirlwind, is your use him right he can be a really good pokemon just try to cover his weaknesses he really fragile

I'll won't ever tell someone to never use a certain Pokemon, but to be honest, I would recommend using Cresselia over Grumpig; it outclasses Grumpig in almost every way. However, if you want to use it, then some moves that you'd want to use are Icy Wind, Trick Room, Psychic/Psyshock, Reflect/Light Screen, Grass Knot, Energy Ball, Power Gem, and Signal Beam. If you want to get creative, try Simple Beam, Skill Swap, and Teeter Dance.

True, Sejun Park won with his Pachirisu, but he is widely acknowledged as the best Pokemon player in the world, so if you really want to use Grumpig, you'll have to be very deliberate with your strategy like Sejun is.

This current metagame is more physically offensive than special. With that said, Grumpig has awful defenses. Even a few not very effective hits pull it down to less than 50% HP. I'm not saying you can't do it but it is going to be difficult and I can only suggest running a Support set with Icy Wind, Teeter Dance, Psyshock and Protect

I just created a spread that has a guaranteed 2HKO defensively against Mega king and Talonflame while getting 2HKO or OHKO against them.

Can you post the set? There may be Pokemon that can counter it that you're not thinking about.

It's Calm, with 182 HP, 252 Def, 72 SpAtt, 4 Spe. It knows Psychic, Power Gem, I don't know what else, If I should try RestTalk and Baton Pass a Calm Mind/Nasty Plot to it or use Calm Mind with something using Heal Pulse. It holds a life orb.

Some calcs

252 Atk Parental Bond Mega Kangaskhan Return vs. 182 HP / 252 Def Grumpig: 130-154 (73 - 86.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252 Atk Parental Bond Mega Kangaskhan Sucker Punch vs. 182 HP / 252 Def Grumpig: 138-165 (77.5 - 92.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
(138, 141, 141, 144, 144, 147, 150, 150, 153, 153, 156, 156, 159, 159, 162, 165)

+2 72 SpA Life Orb Grumpig Psychic vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Mega Kangaskhan: 133-156 (73.4 - 86.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
(133, 133, 134, 136, 138, 140, 140, 142, 144, 146, 148, 148, 149, 152, 153, 156)

+2 72 SpA Life Orb Grumpig Power Gem vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Talonflame: 421-499 (273.3 - 324%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Yeah, I see a small problem here named Bisharp.

252+ Atk Bisharp Sucker Punch vs. 182 HP / 0 Def Grumpig: 206-246 (115.7 - 138.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ Atk Bisharp Night Slash vs. 182 HP / 0 Def Grumpig: 182-216 (102.2 - 121.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Not only is Bisharp faster and able to OHKO, Grumpig can do almost nothing to it even if you attack it on a switch-in. Focus Blast does OHKO Bisharp, but its accuracy is really unreliable.

You might also run into some other problems.

+1 252 Atk Aerilate Mega Salamence Return vs. 182 HP / 0 Def Grumpig: 261-307 (146.6 - 172.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO

72 SpA Grumpig Focus Blast vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Mega Metagross: 41-49 (26.4 - 31.6%) -- guaranteed 4HKO

72 SpA Grumpig Hidden Power Fire vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Mega Metagross: 42-50 (27 - 32.2%) -- guaranteed 4HKO

Grumpig is too slow, and these Pokemon can wall it. That being said, if you allocate your EV's differently, you may find a set that works. Just keep trying!

I can't counter everything, but I can partner it with others. I've made 3 sets and will be doing 50 battles each, taking notes of its counters and notable partners. Thanks for the calcs, it'll help knowing what to watch for! And I just created a counter to Bisharp, Garchomp and Salamence (if I can OHKO a mega Salamence with HP Ice, Garchomp won't take it nicely either).

252 SpA Life Orb Alakazam Hidden Power Ice vs. 0 HP / 0- SpD Mega Salamence: 224-265 (131.7 - 155.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO
(224, 224, 229, 229, 234, 234, 239, 239, 244, 244, 250, 250, 255, 255, 260, 265)

252 SpA Life Orb Alakazam Focus Blast vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Bisharp: 489-577 (346.8 - 409.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO
(489, 494, 499, 504, 510, 515, 525, 530, 536, 541, 546, 551, 556, 562, 567, 577)

0- Atk Life Orb Alakazam Foul Play vs. 0 HP / 0- Def Mega Metagross: 120-143 (77.4 - 92.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
(120, 122, 122, 125, 125, 127, 130, 130, 133, 133, 135, 135, 138, 138, 140, 143)

50 battles is a bit ridiculous for testing out your sets, just do 10-20 battles. Running two Psychic types is also a bad idea in VGC. Sucker Punch removes Alakazam from the playing field, not to mention if the opponent sets up Tailwind or Trick Room. For a core around Grumpig, you could do a Grumpig/Mienshao/<steel type> core or a Grumpig/Weavile/<intimidater> core.
