@Jeremmy it's because I downloaded the wonder card for the event and injected it into my game. My game language is English so when I picked up the Koko in the Pokémon Center it set it's language to ENG.
It would be the same as if a Japanese player with their game language set to English received the event, or if I was in Japan and received the event on my European 3ds with my language set to English (the event is being done through code so any region 3ds/game can receive it).
