KARTANA-ING MY WAY TO THE TOP (VGC 2017 TEAM) - Eugenio - Jan 10, 2017 Praise Arceus.
February 23, 2015. This date marks the day I began my journey as a competitive Pokémon battler. My decision in trying it out came from watching Lord Emvee's videos. His PokémonShowdown Lives and Pimp My Squad videos have taught me a great deal about team building and strategy. Now, more than a full year and several teams later, I'm testing my hand at VGC. With the available resources - mainly the Competitive Pokémon Movesets forum and YouTube channels that focus on the format - I've put together a team which I will hopefully end up using in local VGC tournaments. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TEAM OVERVIEW: TEAM'S WEAKNESSES & RESISTANCES: Based on the table, my team has at least two Pokémon that can switch in and take 1/2x damage (or none) from advantageous moves that inflict 2x and 4x damage. A well balanced team, though Ground- and Ghost-types are a concern. TEAM'S MOVE COVERAGE: Though the table only shows my team as having moves to deal with 11 out of the 18 Pokémon types, Ghost (Marowak's Shadow Bone), Ice (Milotic's Ice Beam), and Fairy (Tapu Fini's Moonblast) are not being registered. Therefore, the real total is 14. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TEAM EXPLANATION & ANALYSIS: Kartana @ Choice Band
Ability: Beast Boost Level: 50 EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe Jolly Nature - Leaf Blade - Sacred Sword - Smart Strike - Night Slash
In retrospect, my team consists of two cores - a triumvirate of Pokémon whose type synergy hinder and overcome the other's weaknesses. Kartana plus Alolan Marowak and Milotic form the first triad (fire-water-grass). Despite a limit to four moves, Leaf Blade wounds Ground-, Rock-, and Water-type rivals to below half Hit Points. A Smart Strike from the Ultra Beast slays Rock-, Ice-, and Fairy-type Pokémon. When confronting Ghost- and Psychic-type contenders, Night Slash lacerates them; while Sacred Sword combats Normal-, Rock-, Steel-, Ice-, and Dark-types. Diminishing the effect of Intimidate, Choice Band lets Kartana's STAB attacks mete out adequate damage on Pokemon, such as Gyarados and Salamence.
In his second VGC 2017 Teambuilder video, xRazeOvation goes over this Kartana. Straightforward, the division of EVs entitle the Ultra Beast to strike first and hard. With abysmal Hit Points and Special Defense, optimizing Attack and Speed by invigorating 252 EVs in each, the latter of which is augmented due to Kartana being Jolly nature, quickens the Ultra Beast to blindside foes like Gastrodon and carry out a grave onslaught. Relevant Offensive Calculations: Relevant Defensive Calculations: Marowak-Alola (M) @ Thick Club
Ability: Lightning Rod Level: 50 EVs: 252 HP / 180 Atk / 4 Def / 68 SpD / 4 Spe Adamant Nature - Flare Blitz - Protect - Shadow Bone - Bonemerang
Alolan Marowak is a well rounded Pokémon and team ally. Acquiring the Fire- and Ghost-typing upon evolving, grants six new resistances majority of which are super effective against Alolan Marowak's teammates. Retaining Lightning Rod as an ability, not only prevents Alolan Marowak from being hurt by Electric-type moves, but redirects them as well, enabling Alolan Marowak to take down the enemy who pose a danger to Milotic and Tapu Fini. When partnered with Alolan Dugtrio, protecting allows Earthquake to be used.
2016 Pokémon Worlds Champion (Masters Division), Wolfe Glick, discussed this Alolan Marowak as part of his Competitive Movesets for VGC '17 video series. He mentioned allocating 252 EVs in Hit Points assures Alolan Marowak does not blackout from a single powerful attack, for instance a Stone Edge from Jolly Aerodactyl with 252 EVs in Attack. The 68 EVs in Special Defense, Glick stated, is so Alolan Marowak can tolerate a Psychic - in Psychic Terrain - from Modest Tapu Lele with 252 EVs in Special Attack. Empowered by an Adamant nature and 180 EVs in Attack, which is doubled thanks to Thick Club, Alolan Marowak can deliver devastating blows to opponents. Relevant Offensive Calculations: Relevant Defensive Calculations: Goodra (F) @ Assault Vest
Ability: Sap Sipper Level: 50 EVs: 252 HP / 12 Def / 180 SpA / 64 SpD Bold Nature - Dragon Pulse - Thunderbolt - Flamethrower - Sludge Bomb
Early on in development, Gyarados was part of the team, but after several mock battles on PokémonShowdown I concluded a replacement was needed. Because I'd utilized Goodra in the past, I knew the plethora of moves Goodra could either learn by leveling up or through TMs - attacks that could deal with current and foreseeable threats to fellow team members. Regarding Goodra's ability, the decision to choose Sap Sipper over Gooey, which reduces the Speed of a Pokémon when contact is made by 1 stage, was because it makes Goodra a safe switch in for Milotic and Tapu Fini on incoming Grass-types moves since Sap Sipper negates damage from such attacks. In addition, should Celesteela and Goodra be the last Pokémon in a match, the Ultra Beast can't Leech Seed and Substitute to stall and win.
Unlike the other Pokémon on this team, the distribution of Goodra's EVs were done by me - my first time doing so. Right off the bat, I knew Goodra had to have enough bulk behind it to live both physical and special attacks from other Pseudo-legendaries and Alola's guardians while at the sametime boasting sufficient investment in Special Attack to wreak serious damage in return. To do so, the maximum amount of EVs a single stat can receive - 252 - were added to Goodra's Hit Points and with an already high base Special Defense, it was clear a Bold nature alongside 12 EVs in Defense would benefit Goodra in order to bear a Dragon Claw from a Jolly, non-Choice Banded Garchomp with 252 EVs in Attack. In terms of Goodra's Special Defense, the boost from an Assault Vest combined with 64 EVs, permits Goodra to last a Blizzard from Timid Alolan Ninetales. Putting the remaining 180 EVs in Special Attack, Goodra is able to two hit KO Metagross and similar Pokémon, as well as half of the Tapu (Sludge Bomb from Goodra demolishes Tapu Bulu). Note: As of me writing this, using Nugget Bridge's VGC 2017 damage calculator, I've realized Goodra doesn't really need 64 EVs in Special Defense. Transferring some of those EVs to Defense would allow Goodra to endure physical hits more comfortably. I'll also be experimenting around with Gooey Goodra. Relevant Offensive Calculations: Relevant Defensive Calculations: Milotic (F) @ Adrenaline Orb
Ability: Competitive Level: 50 EVs: 252 HP / 212 Def / 36 SpA / 4 SpD / 4 Spe Modest Nature - Scald - Recover - Ice Beam - Protect Beware, Pokemon with Intimidate. Having access to the Competitive Ability, which raises Special Attack by 2 stages when any stat is lowered, Milotic becomes a great counter to common intimidators, such as Arcanine, Gyarados, Salamence, and Krookodile. However, the sharp increase in Special Attack alone is not enough pressure placed on these types of Pokémon. Equipped with an Adrenaline Orb, popping when the holder is intimidated and raising speed by 1 stage, allows Milotic to out run Modest Arcanine with 0 EVs in Speed and Adamant, non-Choice Scarfed, non-Focus Slashed Krookodile with a guaranteed chance to knockout each with a single Scald.
In the same video xRazeOvation talked about Kartana's potential, he introduced this Milotic. Investing 252 EVs in Hit Points and 212 EVs in Defense, Milotic is ensured to survive a Devastating Drake (Dragon-type Z-Move) from a Modest Salamence with 252 EVs in Special Attack and an Earthquake (or Dragon Claw) from a Jolly, Choice Banded Garchomp with 252 EVs in Attack. Once Milotic has endured, thanks to a Modest nature and 36 EVs in Special Attack, Milotic has the opportunity to faint said Pokémon with an Ice Beam and send them back into the Poké Ball from which they emerged. Relevant Offensive Calculations: Relevant Defensive Calculations: Dugtrio-Alola (F) @ Focus Sash
Ability: Tangling Hair Level: 50 EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe Jolly Nature - Rock Slide - Sucker Punch - Iron Head - Earthquake
Though slower than the non-regional variant, Alolan Dugtrio manages to get ahead of team adversaries like Alolan Ninetails, Pelipper, Torkoal, and Tapu Bulu. Armed with Rock Slide and Iron Head provides a 30% to flinch opposing Pokémon, loosing the chance to inflict damage. Should a Fake Out by Alolan Raichu, Alolan Persian or Weavile be used against Alolan Dugtrio, Tangling Hair will reduce Speed by 1 stage, giving Alolan Dugtrio the upper hand next turn to retaliate with a defeating move. Living on 1 Hit Point thanks to Focus Sash, Alolan Dugtrio is guaranteed to brave through attacks, for example a Flare Blitz from Gale Wings Talonflame or a Scald from Swift Swim Golduck, that would otherwise eliminate Alolan Dugtrio.
Taken from the Basic Movesets for All Alolan Form Pokémon post in PokémonForever's Competitive Pokémon Movesets Fourm, the purpose of the recommended EV spread is akin to Kartana's - catalyze Alolan Dugtrio to afflict damage fast and vigorous. Amplifying both Attack and Speed, which is further nourished by a Jolly nature, with 252 EVs in each, means Alolan Dugtrio can Iron Head Tapu Lele or Tapu Bulu unconscious on the second turn. Moreover, Pokémon who are faster and able to avoid the effects of Tangling Hair - Aerodactyl, Tapu Koko, and Pheromosa to name a few - can still be severely injured by Alolan Dugtrio. Relevant Offensive Calculations: Relevant Defensive Calculations: Tapu Fini @ Leftovers
Ability: Misty Surge Level: 50 EVs: 252 HP / 244 Def / 4 SpA / 4 SpD / 4 Spe Calm Nature - Scald - Calm Mind - Moonblast - Protect
A good portion of VGC 2017 teams incorporate either Tapu Koko, Tapu Lele, Tapu Bulu, or Tapu Fini as was seen during the European International Championships and the San José Regional Championship late last year. Of the four, Tapu Fini is the least used. Besides forming part of the steel-fairy-dragon core, Tapu Fini's ability Misty Surge, which summons Misty Terrain, prevents all grounded Pokémon from suffering a non-volatile status condition (burn, freeze, paralysis, poisoned, etc.) for five turns and halves Dragon-type attacks. Thus, along with Protect and Leftovers, which replenishes Hit Points a little, makes Tapu Fini a viable aid to the Pokémon on my team as they go all out against opponents unafraid.
In the 6th installment of his Competitive Movesets for VGC '17 video series, Wolfe Glick went over this Tapu Fini. Supported by high Defense and Special Defense - the former stat having 244 EVs; the latter enhanced by a Calm nature - the 252 EVs in Hit Points secures Tapu Fini withstands multiple hits. As a result, a Jolly Garchomp with 252 EVs in Attack using Poison Jab will be Moonblast to oblivion before Garchomp can. Through Calm Mind, which raises Special Attack and Special Defense by 1 stage, Tapu Fini can blackout a Till Böhmer Goodra first. Note: As of writing this, I'm considering swapping Tapu Fini for Tapu Lele. TEAM IN ACTION (REPLAYS): Before laboring (and experiencing déjà vu while running around) in hatching the Pokémon for a team, I spend a good amount of testing on PokémonShowdown. Because I've been trying out this team, I decided to create a new (unregistered) account and start from the bottom. My streak, for the first 10 battles was 8 wins and 2 loses. However, since the VGC format is a best of 3, I wanted to see how I would do against players who had knowledge of what my team was capable of. @Feax and @AndyHG were kind in enough to help me out with this. CLOSING REMARKS:
In conclusion, the six Pokémon that comprise the team I'll be using for local VGC 2017 tournaments, as my thorough assessment has hopefully conveyed, bring a unity of types, stats, moves, and abilities to answer and beat Pokémon they are weak to. By no means, is this team perfect as I'll be adjusting a few team members, Goodra and Tapu Fini primarily. Feedback and bringing up discrepancies in my calculations or elsewhere is appreciated. Above all, thank you for taking the time to read my writing endeavor.
RE: KARTANA-ING MY WAY TO THE TOP (VGC 2017 TEAM) - Hojunhu - Jan 10, 2017 If you wanted to, you get the same KOs with Wak at 140Att that you get with 180Att. Gives you 40 more EVs to either put into speed (Waks are being made to speed creep the speed creep Waks) or just make more bulkier. RE: KARTANA-ING MY WAY TO THE TOP (VGC 2017 TEAM) - Black117 - Jan 15, 2017 This is a rather interesting team you have their @Eugenio given how there are some unique item choices you have such as the Choice Band Kartana. Let me just say to pair a Choice Band on a Pokemon with base 181 attack is almost disgusting, yet it is incredibly strong to begin with. My main concern with CB Kartana is you are already going to achieve the same 2HKOs as its other forms given how "weak" some of its moves are in the long run. Since you do have the Focus Sash on the Alolan Dugtrio, try to give Kartana maybe a Z-Move like Z-Leaf Blade or Z-Scared Sword with protect replacing Night Slash. This should give Kartana that extra firepower to get some crucial OHKOs where your opponent least expects its, and potentially get a boost. Locking yourself into one move with Choice Band on an already move deprived when you can potentially get a pseudo choice band boost from beast boost is appealing enough. Kartana @ Fightinium Z / Grassium Z Ability: Beast Boost Level: 50 EVs: 156 Atk / 100 SpD / 252 Spe Jolly Nature - Leaf Blade - Smart Strike - Sacred Sword - Protect The Alolan Marowak set to me seems fine though try to see where you can optimize some of the EVs and even test out some stuff like Perish Song, Substitute, etc on it. Not much to go about A-Marowak, though do feel like it needs some kinda of Trick Room mode to operate well. My issue with Goodra is that you can actually "improve" the EV spread just by making it a Modest variant with significant Defense EVs and diverting some Special Defense EVs into Special Attack. The set on Goodra is good enough and you don't have to test "Gooey" since Goodra can actually "wall" Tapu Bulu thanks to Sap Sipper. I can see Goodra working well to combat opposing weather-based teams, however you don't have enough good weather checks aside the Dragon itself and your opponent will make it a priority to take down Goodra. For that, I'd recommend changing one of these Pokemons to improve the weather matchup. Now the Alolan Dutrio is doesn't make sense to have on a team like this. The main issue I have with Alolan Dugtrio is it doesn't have Arena Trap unlike its other counterpart and the "speed control" from Tangled Hair isn't the best. Considering that your team does indeed have some weaknesses to Ghost- and Ground-types, and needs some form of speed control, well you can try this Mandibuzz. Mandibuzz @ Misty Seed / Sitrus Berry Ability: Overcoat Level: 50 EVs: 244 HP / 4 Def / 4 SpA / 244 SpD / 12 Spe Bold Nature IVs: 0 Atk - Foul Play - Snarl / Taunt - Tailwind - Roost This Mandibuzz set is quite bulky given how it has a overall strong defenses, a great typing, and can take some strong special hits thanks to the Misty Seed, which is raised when an opposing Tapu Fini's Misty Terrain is in play. The EVs are kinda weird but it does let is survive a Z High Jump Kick from Pheromosa, Z-Hydro Pump from Golduck in the rain, and two Thunderbolts from Tapu Koko with the Misty Seed + Misty Terrain up. Foul Play is there to essentially punish any setup down by the opposing Pokemon, meanwhile Snarl can suppress the special attacker's damage output. Tailwind allows Mandibuzz to provide some consistent speed control for 3 turns while Roost is there for recovery purposes. Regarding the Milotic, it need some "significant" changes to its EV Spread to abuse the Speed from the Adrenaline Orb. If I were you, consider reallocating some of the EVs into Speed and Special Attack, then lastly some into HP like this one. Not much else to say. Milotic @ Adrenaline Orb Ability: Competitive Level: 50 EVs: 116 HP / 4 Def / 236 SpA / 4 SpD / 148 Spe Modest Nature - Scald - Ice Beam - Recover - Protect For your Tapu Fini, might want to consider adding som speed EVs and maybe a bit into Special Attack like the following below: Tapu Fini @ Leftovers Ability: Misty Surge Level: 50 EVs: 244 HP / 148 Def / 52 SpA / 4 SpD / 60 Spe Calm Nature IVs: 0 Atk - Moonblast - Scald - Calm Mind - Protect This lets you outspeed most Tapu Fini sets that aren't significantly speed creep, has enough SpA where a +1 CM Moonblast can OHKO chomp, and the outspeed a good chuck of pokemon like Pheromosa thanks to the Tailwind boosts. Still don't know if you want to change Fini for Lele, though say so in a reply. Honestly the team still needs some improvements here and there, though I feel its off to a great start. Just a matter of team testing and figuring out your EV Spreads on your mons is key here. Again hope this helps. RE: KARTANA-ING MY WAY TO THE TOP (VGC 2017 TEAM) - Eugenio - Jan 15, 2017 @Black117, thanks for providing feedback on my team and for the compliment. To start, most of the recommendations you're making are on point in regards to what my team is currently experiencing on Showdown. As a recently heard, it isn't VGC unless a Pokémon has Protect and though I'm a little hesitant in replacing Night Slash, I believe giving the Ultra Beast a Z-Crystal is an idea I'll be looking into. Doing a little damage calculations, if up against Eviolite Porygon2 using Sacred Sword powered by Z-Fightinimum and another move could potentially KO it. One note, are the 100 EVs in Sp. Defense so Kartana can live a Blizzard from Alolan Ninetales? I believe xRazeOvation did the very samething for the very same reason. Haven't been able to test out what you've suggested @Hojunhu, but I've noticed most of the other Alolan Marowaks I've faced are slower, so I might increase the EVs in Speed and Defense. Yep, Sap Sipper Goodra walls Tapu Bulu. As for the EVs, I may experiment with the spread Till Böhmer used for his Goodra - build from it or simply borrow it. I, too, have noticed that especially when it comes to rain teams. Goodra feels so attacked at times. Alolan Dugtrio has its shining moments, no doubt. Playing around with a possible replacement wouldn't hurt. Adding Mandibuzz is interesting, seeing that I've been walled by several as of late. The thought crossed my mind, about changing Milotic's EVs since xRazeOvation also made adjustments to his own Milotic based on the teams he was going up against in Battle Spot. I'll be sure to test this set. Not entirely sure if Tapu Lele will replace Tapu Fini, I just started battling again using this team and one with Tapu Lele on it. I might end up keeping Tapu Fini since I can set up against members of rain teams and resist the attacks from sun based teams. Thanks again. RE: KARTANA-ING MY WAY TO THE TOP (VGC 2017 TEAM) - TheGamingPerson12 - Jan 16, 2017 Since you have a ghost weakness on your team, you shouldn't add tapu lele, then the ghosts can sweep your team. On goodra, you can change the 64SpD to 60 because that wastes EVs that could go into speed or something. RE: KARTANA-ING MY WAY TO THE TOP (VGC 2017 TEAM) - Eugenio - Jan 16, 2017 @TheGamingPerson12, noted. |
