If you two can't find each other in the friends list even with friend codes added there is another way to trade, use the GTS to trade something worthless then go into the plaza castle and the person you last traded with is on the right. When talking to them in the castle you can add them to your VIP list and select them from that list to trade with. 

I figure even if you don't need this advice this time it is good to know for the future
