Dumping old teams and such, yadda yadda. This one isn't actually that old. This became my improved dodrio cup team, and it was literally 10x better than my old team. Sadly enough, I made team changes way too late and my team didn't get to make it into top 8. However, I had a very very close game with user Black117 with this team. It was only a BO1, but I think we both had a lot of fun while playing each other with our teams. Black ended up taking the game 0-1, and even with the close loss: I was very happy with the team. I made one small change to it however, and begin laddering with the improved version right away.
Any who, anyone who knows me knows I have a problem when it comes to getting bored fast & wanting to use different stuff. I really didn't want to use a common mega. I really like Gyarados too, my only problem with it last year is that it didn't know crunch. lol. However, this year it got it. I used it a few times in singles and enjoyed it, so decided to bring it to VGC.
Let's get started with the mega, shall we?
---->
Carnage (Gyarados) @ Gyaradosite (Named after a friend of mine. He really likes red and I always name my Gyarados's this now, and make them shiny. Shout outs to brownbear, tho.)
Ability: Intimidate
Level: 50
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 252 HP / 116 Atk / 92 Def / 44 SpD / 4 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Protect
- Waterfall
- Crunch
I decided on D-Dance Gyara pretty quickly. I already had an idea for team members. Which was tailwind & redirection; and D-Dance fits perfectly. Redirection obviously helped out free d-dances, and the speed increase was always nice in case I couldn't set up tailwind. Plus, I've always been a damage kind of guy. stall definitely isn't my play style, ya know?
Anyways, back to Gyara. Really happy with the work it put in. I think the biggest part on why it did so much to me was just basic mind games. Is it a mega? Does it have ice fang? Earthquake? D-Dance? Is it a defensive set with t-wave and such? Does it have crunch? Lots of cool things can come into play with this mega, and it's definitely pushed up in my personal rankings. It's just really nice to hit things like cress really hard with crunch. Oh, and waterfall is cool too. Big damage andflinches
Oh yeah, and most important calc of all time:
252+ SpA Choice Specs Pixilate Sylveon Hyper Voice vs. 252 HP / 44 SpD Mega Gyarados: 168-200 (83.1 - 99%) -- guaranteed 2HKO WE. LIVIN.
Calcs:
Misdirection, boyz.
Mist (Clefairy) @ Eviolite (Named after Ike's sister, mist. She's small and does healing stuff. So. Clefairy.)
Ability: Friend Guard
Level: 50
EVs: 236 HP / 204 Def / 4 SpA / 60 SpD / 4 Spe
Bold Nature
- Follow Me
- Thunder Wave
- Moonblast
- Protect
I didn't want to use Amoonguss only because everyone uses that dumb mushroom lol
Plus I have a personal gripe with it because it's so easy to spore spam.
Didn't wanna use togekiss because that'd just add to my electric weakness. So I decided on clefairy here. I wanted friend guard just to help with the extra bulk, so i went for fairy instead of fable.
Follow me is self explanatory. I also love it because it can make me dodge a taunt or t-wave for gyara to strengthen up. Moonblast was for general damage. Plus it's always nice to predict a taunt and get off some small damage on something, or decent chunks off of fighting/dragon/dark types. Protect is cruise control for cool. T-Wave, I question. I tried helping hand, t-wave, and even icy wind. Couldn't really decide on one, and looking back I should have done more testing. I settled on T-Wave just for the extra speed control plus landing paralysis's are always dope.
Pretty happy with clefairy here, friend guard definitely came in clutch in numerous occasions. It's also nice that the 2 most common steel types (heatran and aegislash) fear mega gyarados, so that's awesome. I think they're a great duo.
So, gyarados is weak to fairy. cant redirect hyper voice. so I need wide guard, or something to take them out.
HEATRAN BOYZ
Kraggon (Heatran) @ Safety Goggles (I wouldn't mind having my own pet Kraggon. Google it.)
Ability: Flash Fire
Level: 50
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Flamethrower
- Earth Power
- Flash Cannon
- Protect
Heatran is probably my most used legend on vgc15. It's just really good. Beats amoonguss, deals with thundurus decently, hits aegislash, metagross, beats sylveon, and it even beats itself. Really standard fast tran here. Just to beat opposing heatrans, and hit sylveon. everything else is extra. I originally was running life orb, then chople berry. But life orb is on another user, and I kinda lose to TR Amoongus, so S-Goggles helps a lot. Pretty common item choice, and common mon/spread.
Next is the speed control game.
Kaminari (Zapdos) @ Sitrus Berry (It means thunder. Clever, amirite?)
Ability: Pressure
Level: 50
EVs: 232 HP / 40 Def / 20 SpA / 100 SpD / 116 Spe
Bold Nature
- Thunderbolt
- Hidden Power [Ice]
- Tailwind
- Roost
This spread was literally ripped from user Black117. Except for his particular set, he was running heat wave. Still, EV's and all are his. So major credits to him.
Thanks to this set, Zapdos has honestly become my favorite tailwind user. Which.. surprises me. This mon constantly surprises me. My first time using it was an offensive set and it was amazing. Now I'm using a bulkier set, and it's still amazing.
Anywho, standard set of STAB, hp Ice, tailwind, roost. Nothing else to really say. I just really like this Pokemon a lot, and basically all of my current tailwind teams have Zapdos on it. It's nichze.
My next choice may be a little weird. I dunno, some think it's weird.
Adlet Mayer (Blaziken) @ Life Orb (I'm the strongest man in the world!)
Ability: Speed Boost
Level: 50
EVs: 196 Atk / 156 SpA / 156 Spe
Naughty Nature
- Overheat
- Low Kick
- Rock Slide
- Protect
Some people might think it's weird to have a speed boost mon on a tailwind team, but I don't. Speed boost pokemon are kind of a "speed control" type for themself, so it's nice to have. It can sometimes combat opposing tailwind users according to their spreads/my speed boosts, and if both of us have tailwind up Blaziken still stays the fastest on the field. I really enjoyed using Blaziken, as it racks up so many KO's and just a threat that I feel is a little uncommon to most players.
I sat here running calcs with this thing for like 7 hours
Not really, but I was definitely calcing things for a while. I've never used Blaziken seriously in VGC and didn't like other builds, so I went in and tinkered around with spreads. I basically wanted a way to hit Kang reliably, toss Aegislash even more, hit other heatrans, metagross, yadda yadda, you get the deal.
I forget exactly why I did this exact ev spread, as I made this like a month ago. But it does important stuff probably.
I really can't remember the speed reasoning. But I know I sat there calcing speed for a while, with speed boosts and without. I know with 1 speed boost I outspeed like all mega threats. Kang, Char-Y, Metagross, etc. Sorry I can't remember ;N; But the damage calcs are really cool.
Henry (Gengar) @ Focus Sash (Well, I usually disarm my foes by removing their arms.)
Ability: Levitate
Level: 50
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Shadow Ball
- Sludge Bomb
- Taunt
- Will-O-Wisp
This used to be scarfed Latios, for Landorus-T but I basically found out that I didn't need it/scarf latios isn't that good due to how easy it is to predict. I switched to Gengar and well, I'm okay with it here. I went for 4 moves, no protect with sash. It's fun to burn bisharps/kangs that try to sucker punch Gengar. I also wanted a taunt user to annoy thundurus. I also felt like Gengar was fine here since I have so many ways to beat Aegislash, and finally Gengar fills the role of being able to switch into EQ's easily.
Nothing else to really say about this mon, I'm happy with it. Calcs arent really worth showing, because Gengar doesn't really snatch any important OHKO's. It always barely misses a one shot. Which is fine honestly, since that means all I have to do it hit something with a rock slide and then Gengar comes through on whatever. It's much more important for it's taunting/burning roll, than it is for it's chip damage.
Anywho, that's the team. Yeah buddy.
Blaziken/Zapdos/Gyarados for the MVP's.
Wanna try the team yourself? Take it.
