How long did it take you to get comp ready legendaries ?

I am soft resetting for a Heatran right now for the first time, but now I am on my tenth try and still, 
that perfect Heatran hasn't showed it's steely head.
Are there any tips or tricks? Or should I just bite the bullet and keep working at it?
